The sun is shining and we are waiting for Sean to come and cut the hay meadows. They are abundant with birdsfoot trefoil and purple loosestrife now. I was excited to find 10 lesser butterfly orchids in our fields this year and thousands of heath orchids. These are all gone to seed now and the hay is ripe for the cutting. We often make haylage (wettish hay) here in connemara as it is too hard to dry it completely with unexpected rainfall.
