Appropriate Assessment for Ecologists

This course will equip you with knowledge of the appropriate assessment process, its underlying purpose, legislative requirements and procedures. By the end of the day you will be able to understand AA terminology, be aware of what is required to screen simple projects and be able to know when to call in other specialists to assist in the stages in AA.

Following the course Participants will be able to

  1. Prepare a basic Appropriate Assessment Screening
  2. Interact with other professionals in relation to projects within and adjacent to Natura 2000 sites.
  3. Competently use all the acronyms associated with Appropriate Assessment and Designated Areas.
  4. Explain the difference between EIA/AA
  5. Describe Legal background of Birds and Habitats Directives and the 2010 Planning Act in relation to Natura 2000 sites including aspects such as retention, extension of time and exempt development.
  6. Recognise competent authorities and list their responsibilities.
  7. Evaluate appropriate assessments and seek additional information if required.

The course will use games, worksheets and  multiple case studies  (windfarms, roads, quarries , marinas, dive centres and walking trails) to achieve learning objectives.

Discussion time will be timetabled and specific examples may be addressed if required.

Training will be carried out by Marie Louise Heffernan CEnv, MCIEEM, MSc (see www.aster.ie) an ecologist with 20 years experience specialising in Habitats Directive and Appropriate Assessment
